Through Jesus

We’re memorizing a condensed version of 1 Peter 1:3 by starting with the phrase “Through Jesus.” The whole phrase reads: God is so good, and by raising Jesus from death …” This phrase reminds us why we celebrate Easter: because of Jesus’ death and resurrection! God’s plan to redeem the whole world from sin, and to reconcile all people to himself, was accomplished through Jesus. Through Jesus, God healed the whole world. We’ll learn more about what that healing means in the next phrase of this verse.

God has given us new life …

The Bible talks a lot about “new life” through Jesus, and it is a phrase we hear a lot of during Easter. But what does it mean? In the Old Testament prophecy book Isaiah, God reveals His forever plan for His people:

“I am creating new heavens
    and a new earth;
everything of the past
    will be forgotten.
Celebrate and be glad forever!
I am creating a Jerusalem,
    full of happy people.”

(Isaiah 65:17–18)

The “new life” God promises us through Jesus is the eternal life in God’s forever kingdom, when Jesus will reign as king. Nothing will be sad, and everything will be free from the effects of sin. When Jesus died and rose again, he was the “first to be raised to life, and his people will be raised to life when he returns” (1 Corinthians 15:23). That means that when we believe in Jesus, our death will be real, but it will not be forever. Jesus will return and we will all be raised to new life! In God’s perfect kingdom!

… and a hope that lives on.

The last phrase of our Easter memory verse reminds us that our hope in Jesus is FOREVER! No matter what happens in our life, we have hope that God will take care of us because He sent us His Son Jesus. Our hope will never fail, because it is secure in what Jesus did on the cross thousands of years ago. The hope we have from Easter can continue every single day of our lives.
