How to Teach Kids Responsibility

Boys are first tactile/kinesthetic learners and then they become more visual/spatial/experiential learners. They are not typically auditory learners so telling them is much less effective than showing them.

Use visuals like charts to remind kids (especially boys) of their responsibilities.

Start young. Kids ages 3-5 can learn responsibility by doing small things.

 

Before age 6, it’s important to do the task with kids so they can learn and be supported.

 

It’s important for teens to have some part-time work so they learn responsibility.

 

Working under other voices is part of how kids grow and develop.

 

Working provides learning opportunities in time management and money management.

Intentional Practices:

  • Use a chore app.
  • Make it fun.
  • Keep a list of odd jobs kids can do to earn some extra money.

Responsibility takes practice. Kids will make progress and lose progress but practice means they are moving toward something that will build confidence in their lives.

Respect (Phillipians 1:3-7)

Respect that kids are capable and entrust them with responsibilities.

Expect (Colossians 3:12-14)

Be clear about what you want/expect kids to do.

Look at/notice what kids have done as a way to encourage them.
